The news lately is full of doom and gloom reports regarding the latest biological scourge to come to us from China, the Wuhan Corona Virus, the Corona virus that causes Corona Virus Disease 2019, or COVID-19.

While COVID-19 is nothing to sneeze at (pun intended!), much of the hype and scare-mongering about the current COVID-19 outbreak is quite over-the-top, feeding into the needs of politicians and the sensationalist media.

While scientists and pharmaceutical companies are currently scrambling to create a vaccine to combat COVID-19, currently the best form of defense – and recovery – is a strong, robust immune system. 

Like other similar diseases, it turns out that those who are the most susceptible and vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus are the elderly and other immuno-compromised people, whose immune systems are in a weakened state, and the very young, whose immune systems are not yet fully developed.

Like the common flu however, everyone is at some risk. People with no symptoms may be in a sub-clinical state of compromised immunity, increasing their chances of becoming ill if exposed to a virus – any virus.

This can be addressed. Our recommendations are safe for both children and adults of all ages.

First, as the great Benjamin Franklin would say,  “AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.”

Start With Prevention

Preventing disease is always the best option. Start with keeping your immunity strong, every day, all of the time.

Practice a strong, health-promoting lifestyle, engage in daily exercise, avoid excessive use of tobacco or alcohol, get 6-8 hours of good, restorative sleep every night, and eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and lots of green vegetables.

If you haven’t been doing these things, it’s never to late to start, or to improve.

Active Supplementation

In addition we recommend:

  1. Vitamin D3 supplements – 5,000 mg daily
  2. Colloidal Silver Spray, 30 PPM strength, 5 sprays orally 3 times per day
  3. Vitamin C – 1,000 mg or more daily (call us for recommendations)
  4. A good, high-quality daily multivitamin
  5. Zinc – 50 mg/day for prevention, 75 mg/day for an active viral infection

We also favor and recommend Kyolic Formula #103 with its combination of immune-boosting mushrooms and garlic extracts.

Using  high doses of vitamin C to both prevent and combat virus-caused illnesses is well-established science. Zinc is known to inhibit the replication (growth) of viruses, including coronavirus.

As simple as they sound, these measures are both safe AND effective in further strengthening your immune system, so that if you become exposed to a virus, your body can respond to it effectively.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infection disease cuased by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrom Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The virus first emerged in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and has spread to many countries, including the U.S.  Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Runny nose and sore throat are less common symptoms. 

While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some cases progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure. The mortality rate is below 5% by most current estimates, but varies significantly by age and other health considerations.

The infection spreads from one person to another via respiratory droplets produced from the airway, usually through sneezing or coughing. Transmission through other surfaces is possible if infected droplets have settled on the surface. Transmission in such cases usually occurs from a person touching the surface, and then transmitting the virus to their mouth or nose by touching their face.

Frequent hand washing and disinfecting of common surfaces such as tabletops, handrails, doorknobs, and doors is recommended, as is maintaining distance from other people, and not touching one’s face with unwashed hands.

Use of a mask is recommended for those who suspect they may have the virus, and for those who are taking care of someone with a suspected infection, but they are not considered necessary for general use.

The incubation ranges from 1 to 14 days with an estimated median incubation period of 5 to 6 days, according to the World Health Organization.

Among those who have died after contracting COVID-19, many had pre-existing health conditions including hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseas. The median time from initial symptoms to death was 14 days, but has ranged from 6 to 41 days.

In China, source of the virus, men have had a death rate of approximately 2.8% (between 2-3 deaths per 100 diagnosed cases), while women have had a death rate of 1.7%. For those under 50, the risk of death appears to be less than 0.5%, while for those over 70 the risk rises to 8%.  As of late February 2020, no deaths have yet been reported for children under the age of 10.
